Brief History of the Directorate

The Directorate was previously known as Academic Planning Unit. However, during the restructuring and reorganization exercise in the University in 1997, the Unit was upgraded to a full-fledged directorate and renamed Directorate of Academic Planning and Monitoring (DAPM). It serves as quality assurance organ of the University under the Vice-Chancellor’s office. It has the mandate of monitoring and ensuring effective teaching and learning activities in the University. In the recent past, additional responsibilities have been added to the Directorate such as coordination of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Academic Staff Training and Development (AST&D) intervention.

Our Mission...

  1. Provision of leadership for the academic planning processes and the preparation and revision of University policy documents.

  2. Develop definitions and criteria for use in academic planning processes and resource management, and updating or adjusting plans to fiscal realities.

  3. Co-ordination of academic, research and outreach programmes of the University.

  4. Revisioning and analyzing existing and proposed teaching and outreach programmes; research projects, and External Examiners Reports in connection with the physical, administrative and budgetary requirements.

  5. Ensuring the maintenance of high standards in all the University’s programmes of study through periodic curricular review and revision.

  6. Maintaining a data base (staff statistics, student enrolment and graduation statistics, staff and student work load, external linkages, other resources-equipment, supplies, etc) for use in physical and academic planning, budgeting, and other management requirements.

  7. Participating in the preparation of the University Quinquennial Development Plans, Annual budget and other special reports, e.g. Management Analysis; Research Findings.

  8. Participating in the coordination of linkages and technical cooperation between Departments in the University; with other Universities; Governments and their agencies; International organizations; industries, and other bodies.

  9. Assisting in identifying major teaching and research needs of Departments including equipment procurement and maintenance, and alternative sources of revenue generation.

  10. Developing an effective system for attracting financial and other support for the academic programmes of the University.

  11. Highlighting and protecting individual and group research achievements through seeking patents and nominations for various national and international exhibitions and awards.

  12. Promoting utilization of the University’s vast research results by government, industry and others.

A Directorate that expedites effective co-ordination, streamlining, monitoring and assessment of the academic enhancement progresses.

Our Achievements...

The Directorate of Academic Planning and Monitoring has made some modest and encouraging achievements these past years. Some of these achievements are hereby highlighted:

  1. Through the Academic Planning Committee was able to facilitate and ensure the creation of additional Faculties, Departments and Programmes Departments, new programmes and renaming of several others to reflect contemporary needs and demands.

  2. The Directorate successfully presented the programmes for regular accreditation exercise by the National Universities Commission and Professional Regulatory Bodies. In addition, it assisted in the international accreditation of some postgraduate programmes by the High Council for the Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (HCERES), France and the institutional gap analysis conducted by the UK Quality Assurance Agency (QAA).

  3. In consultation with the Faculties, Departments and other Units in the University coordinated the development of several university policy documents such as the Academic Brief, Strategic Plan, Teaching and Learning Policy, Quality Assurance Policy, Affiliation Policy, etc.

  4. The Directorate successfully processed many applications for Academic Staff Training and Development (AST&D) under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) intervention.

  5. The Directorate in collaboration with the University Supervisory Committee on Affiliation and concerned Faculties and Institutes/Centres had streamlined affiliation matters and drastically reduced the number of affiliate institutions for sub-degree programmes for effective monitoring of academic programmes of all affiliate Institutions to ensure quality teaching/learning.
